DIY Picket Fence Flower Box Decor Tutorial

DIY Picket Fence Flower Box Decor Tutorial

Hey friends! Today I’m going to show you how to make this adorable picket fence flower box décor using simple slats from Lowe’s and a little crate from Dollar Tree.

This project has the prettiest rustic farmhouse feel with chippy paint, flowers, fairy lights, and a vintage-inspired picket fence design. It’s perfect for spring, summer, patriotic décor, or even year-round farmhouse decorating!

Let’s jump in!

Materials List

Step 1: Create the Picket Fence Backer

First, cut points onto the tops of the wood slats so they resemble a little picket fence.

Then, line all the slats up side by side.

Next, cut two additional slat pieces and glue them across the back to hold everything together as one solid piece.

Additionally, use another slat as a spacer while assembling to help keep everything evenly lined up.

Step 2: Add Antique Wax

Once the fence backing is assembled, apply Waverly Antique Wax using a baby wipe.

Make sure to cover both the front and back for a finished look.

Then, apply antique wax around the top edges of the Dollar Tree crate as well.

Step 3: Dry Brush the Fence

Next, use Vintage White paint and a chip brush to dry brush the entire fence.

Dip your brush into the paint, offload most of it, and lightly brush across the wood to create that soft rustic farmhouse finish.

I did both the front and back of the project.

Then, allow everything to dry completely before moving on.

Step 4: Create a Chippy Paint Finish on the Crate

Now it’s time for one of my favorite techniques! First, rub a wax candle all over the crate. This creates a barrier underneath the paint.

Then, paint the crate using the beautiful Cloudy Day blue color.

I painted one side at a time so I wouldn’t accidentally smudge the paint while handling it.

Once dry, use a scraper tool to scrape away some of the paint. Because of the wax underneath, the paint lifts beautifully and creates that aged chippy wood look.

Step 5: Paint and Distress the Star

Now we’re going to repeat the steps above but now onto the little wooden star by adding antique wax, then regular candle wax.

Next, paint a wooden star cutout using Tuscan Red paint and a small sponge.

Then, lightly distress it by scraping or sanding to match the rustic style of the project.

Step 6: Assemble the Main Pieces

Now we’re going to start putting everything together!

First, glue the red star onto the front of your crate. I used hot glue for this.

Then, hot glue the crate into place toward the lower portion of the fence. You’ll really start seeing the project come together here!

Step 7: Add Floral Foam

Next, cut a small piece of floral foam to fit inside the crate. It may take a few trims to get the perfect fit. Then, hot glue the foam into place so it stays secure.

Step 8: Add Spanish Moss and Flowers

Now for the fun part — decorating!

First, glue Spanish moss over the floral foam. Then, begin arranging your flowers.

I added:

  • Three shorter green and white flowers toward the front
  • Three taller flowers in the back
  • Red flowers in the middle and front to fill everything in

This combination turned out so pretty and gives the project such a cozy farmhouse feel.

Step 9: Add Fairy Lights to your Picket Fence Flower Box

Finally, add fairy lights throughout the flower arrangement. I love using these because the battery pack is so small and easy to hide behind projects like this. The lights add such a warm cozy glow and make the project feel extra special!

Finished Picket Fence Flower Box Decor

This project turned out absolutely beautiful and would be perfect for:

  • Gift ideas

I love the combination of the rustic picket fence, chippy crate, soft flowers, and twinkle lights.
