Hey friends, it’s Emily! Today we’re making a simple and adorable Farmhouse Patriotic Star Shelf Sitter that is perfect for Fourth of July, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, or summer decorating.
I love projects like this because they come together quickly, use inexpensive supplies, and add a cozy rustic touch to your home. The combination of distressed red, white, and blue with antique wax and farmhouse embellishments makes this shelf sitter a fun piece to display on a mantel, tiered tray, shelf, or entry table.
Let’s get started!
Materials List
- 3 unfinished wood blocks (I got mine from Hobby Lobby)
- Wooden star cutout from our Stars Pack HERE
- Waverly Antique Wax
- Baby wipes
- Acrylic Paint in the colors: Flamenco Red, Vintage White, and Navy Blue
- Sandpaper / Sanding block
- Dixie Belle Antique Wax
- Blending tool
- Hot glue gun and glue sticks
- Twine
- Brown craft paper
- Fine-point black marker
- Faux greenery
- Small flowers
- Decorative button
Step 1: Stain the Wood Blocks
First, stain all three wood blocks using Waverly Antique Wax and a baby wipe.
This is one of my favorite ways to quickly add a rustic farmhouse look to unfinished wood.

Then, stain your wooden star cutout using the same method and allow everything to dry completely.

Step 2: Paint the Blocks
Next, paint two of the blocks using Flamenco Red paint.

Then, paint the remaining center block using Vintage White paint.

Allow all the paint to dry thoroughly before moving on.
Step 3: Distress the Blocks
Once the paint is dry, lightly sand the blocks using sandpaper and a sanding block.
This step helps reveal some of the wood underneath and creates that worn farmhouse finish we all love.

Step 4: Paint the Star
Now paint the wooden star using a deep navy blue paint.

After it dries, lightly sand the edges and surface to give it a distressed appearance.

Step 5: Add Antique Wax
Next, use Dixie Belle Best Dang Wax (Black) and a blending tool to add depth and age to all of the painted pieces.
Additionally, work the wax into the edges and distressed areas to really highlight the rustic details.

Step 6: Assemble the Shelf Sitter
Now it’s time to put everything together!
First, hot glue the three blocks together, placing the white block in the center between the two red blocks.

Then, glue the blue star directly onto the center of the blocks.

At this point, you’ll start to see the patriotic design come together.

Step 7: Add Twine
Next, wrap twine around the center of the project several times.

Then, tie a small bow and trim the ends to your desired length. This simple detail adds lots of farmhouse charm.

Step 8: Create the USA Tag
Cut a small tag from brown craft paper.
Then, use a fine-point marker to write “USA” on the front.

To give the tag an aged appearance, crumple it a few times and smooth it back out.
Next, brush on a little Waverly Antique Wax followed by a touch of Dixie Belle wax for extra character.

Step 9: Add Embellishments
Now for the finishing touches!
First, glue small pieces of greenery to both sides of the twine bow.

Then, attach the USA tag in the center.
Next, glue a decorative button over the center of the tag.
Finally, add a few small flowers to complete the arrangement.
___
This project turned out so cute and is such an easy way to add a little patriotic farmhouse style to your home.
I love how the distressed finishes, twine, greenery, and vintage-inspired tag all work together to create a piece that feels both rustic and festive.

Whether you’re decorating for the Fourth of July or simply love Americana décor, this shelf sitter is a fun project that can be completed in just an afternoon.
